BTVI Achieves International Accreditation with the Council on Occupational Education (COE)
The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) is elated to announce that it has received accreditation by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). This historic moment signals BTVI’s emergence as an internationally accredited institution and firmly places The Bahamas on the global map of excellence in technical and vocational education.
BTVI is now the first and only fully COE-accredited institution in The Bahamas. BTVI President, Dr. Linda A. Davis described COE accreditation as a landmark, monumental achievement.
“This is not only a BTVI achievement, but a Commonwealth of The Bahamas achievement. It is historic and a pivotal moment in our 76 years of existence. Our programmes now meet globally benchmarked standards. The opportunities that this unlocks for our students are wide-reaching,” stated Dr. Davis.
COE was selected as the international accrediting body due to its global recognition in the career and technical education sector and endorsement by The Bahamas’ very own National Accreditation and Equivalency Council (NAECOB) of which BTVI is also pursuing accreditation.
BTVI’s extraordinary accomplishment is the result of an intensive and comprehensive review process by COE – an accrediting body headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. COE was initially founded as the Commission on Occupational Education Institutions (COEI) under the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
During the accreditation process, BTVI was required to demonstration an alignment with COE’s over 100 criteria across 10 core standards. Faculty and staff were interviewed, facilities were inspected, and institutional data was rigorously scrutinised including for academic standards, institutional quality and student outcomes.
BTVI’s Board of Directors resolved in December 2023 that the institution would commence the process for achieving both national and international accreditation. Institutions pursuing COE accreditation have up to three years to remain a candidate. However, BTVI achieved the coveted COE accreditation designation one year after attaining candidacy.
“It’s an unprecedented timeline that speaks volumes about the amazingly talented BTVI team. To achieve accreditation in such record time is nothing short of phenomenal,” stated Dr. Davis.
“It demonstrates our team’s commitment across the entire network of seven BTVI sites inclusive of New Providence, Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Exuma, North Andros, Abaco and Moore’s Island. This is a crowning moment for BTVI. I am so proud of our team, which has worked cohesively and assiduously to achieve this. There was an unrelenting pursuit to achieve accreditation status,” she said.
Dr. Davis added that as the leading provider of technical and vocational education in The Bahamas, BTVI’s accreditation represents a critical step in the development of a highly skilled, competitive workforce that is essential for the sustainable growth of the country.
“This milestone underscores the institute’s ongoing commitment to high standards of educational excellence and its role in shaping the future of The Bahamas. The impact is far reaching. It’s a victory for the entire nation, demonstrating our collective commitment to creating a workforce capable of driving national economic growth, while simultaneously positioning the BTVI to become the regional hub for technical and vocational training” said Dr. Davis.
BTVI offers programmes designed to equip students with practical skills that directly align with the evolving needs of the country’s workforce across six trade areas including Construction and Mechanical Trades, Business, Information Technology, Electronics and Media Technology, Beauty and Fashion. The accreditation process was rigorous and multifaceted, requiring BTVI to be strategic and tactical in its approach. Before the prized status of accreditation was conferred, during the candidacy stage, COE required BTVI to undergo an in-depth self-study and evaluation.
BTVI’s Accreditation Liaison Officer, Dr. Dorcas Cox said achieving accreditation says a lot about the future of BTVI students, particularly in a world that is becoming increasingly connected and globalised.
“Credentials from accredited institutions are respected by employers, elevating graduates by giving them a competitive edge in the job market and diverse career opportunities. The benefit of accreditation also transcends borders. Graduates from accredited institutions carry credentials that hold global recognition. This facilitates ease of transferring credits or pursuing further studies regionally and or internationally,” said Dr. Cox.
It also says a lot about the commitment of our faculty and staff who by virtue of the training offered are mandated to stay connected with industry through Occupational Advisory Committee to provide ongoing feedback ensuring that our programmes remain current and align with industry requirements.
BTVI is now required to maintain the high standards that led to its success and to continuously demonstrate compliance through ongoing evaluation and improvement. Dr. Cox noted that maintaining accreditation is crucial and goes beyond what some might deem as procedural check sheets to be followed.
“Accreditation signifies an institution’s unwavering commitment to quality and progress. Promoting constant enhancement through ongoing improvement and accountability, regular self-assessment and external evaluations keep the institution aligned with evolving academic demands,” stated Dr. Cox.
Now that accreditation has been achieved, BTVI joins a network of nearly 500 institutions across almost 2,000 campuses throughout the world with a shared mandate to uphold the standard of excellence in occupational education.
