Associate of Applied Science Degree Programmes

Construction Technology Degree

The Associate of Applied Science in Construction Technology provides entry-level training in residential and commercial contracting skills. Students receive instruction in all aspects of residential construction, from infrastructure -- plumbing and electricity -- and foundation/masonry to interior and exterior finishing. Students take introductory level courses in the trades – Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Tiling – as well as courses that teach the skills and competencies which lead to successful careers in the industry - foundation formwork and masonry, drywall framing and finishing, roof framing, computer aided design and drafting. Additionally, courses on site preparation and layout and construction project management introduce students to the unique challenges and practices relevant to the construction industry in The Bahamas and help them acquire the knowledge and competencies essential for success.

Students complete the internationally recognised Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification examination and a 160-hour internship with specialty contractors and construction companies during which they acquire hands-on practical work experience.

Certificates and Diploma Programmes

Auto Mechanics Diploma

The Diploma in Auto Mechanics prepares students to enter the workforce as auto technician trainees, vehicle service writers, auto supplies salespersons, or motor engineer assistants. Students take a variety of specialty courses including engine, diesel and braking systems, steering and suspension systems, electrical and electronic systems, and automotive air conditioning.

Students complete the industry-recognized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification examination and a 160-hour internship during which they acquire practical hands-on experience. This programme equips students with the necessary skills to thrive in the automotive industry and pursue further career opportunities in automotive repair and maintenance.

Auto Collision Repair Certificate

The Certificate Level II in Auto Collision Repair prepares students for entry-level positions in the auto-body industry. Students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to assess and repair damaged vehicles. They complete courses in structural repair, refinishing and oxy-acetylene welding and a 160-hour internship in an auto repair workshop in which they acquire practical hands-on experience.

Students also complete the internationally recognised Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification examination.

Upon successful completion of this programme, students can enter the workforce as an auto collision repair technician trainee, auto estimator’s trainee, or an insurance adjuster trainee.

Carpentry Certificate

The Certificate (Level II) in Carpentry prepares students to enter the workforce. Students acquire basic carpentry skills and techniques. They learn to frame floors, walls, ceilings, scaffolds, ladders, horses, and roofs; prepare and install wall insulation and paneling, commonly used doors and windows, and use prints to construct floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs.

They also learn to install roofs, cabinets, countertops, and concrete form work. Students complete the internationally recognized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification examination and a 160-hour internship in which they refine their carpentry skills and acquire hands-on work experience.

Electrical Installation Certificate

The Certificate (Level II) in Electrical Installation prepares students to enter the workforce as semi-skilled electricians. Students learn the fundamentals of electrical wiring and acquire the skillsets needed to specify and select materials, install electrical devices, and ensure compliance with inspection requirements and regulations governing electrical wiring in The Bahamas.

Students complete the internationally recognized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification examination and a 160-hour internship during which they gain practical hands-on work experience. This programme equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in electrical installation and related fields.

Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning Certificate

The Certificate (Level II) in Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning prepares students for entry-level employment in the HVAC and refrigeration trade. Students acquire the skills needed to service, repair, and replace mechanical parts in air conditioning units, and gain knowledge of electrical systems and circuitry for HVAC and refrigeration motors, thermostats, compressors, and controls.

Students complete the internationally recognized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification examination and a 160-hour internship during which they gain practical hands-on work experience. This programme equips students with the technical expertise required to pursue a career in the HVAC and refrigeration industry.

Maintenance Technician Certificate

The Certificate Level II in Maintenance Technician prepares students for positions in building maintenance and property operations. In this programme, students develop skills and competencies in two of the following trades: carpentry, electrical, refrigerant, plumbing. In addition to acquiring proficiency in their skills-based courses, students complete a 160-hour internship in which they gain practical hands-on work experience. They also complete the internationally recognised Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Certification Examination.

Upon successful completion of this programme, students can enter the workforce as room technicians, general maintenance or facility technicians or shift engineers.

This programme is designed for persons who wish to develop careers in building maintenance and property operations and is open to: (i) recent high school graduates, (ii) persons who have been out of school for some time and who wish to develop job entry level skills, (iii) current practitioners who wish to acquire the academic credential indicating their level of competence.

Plumbing Certificate

The Certificate (Level II) in Plumbing prepares students to enter the workforce as semi-skilled electricians. Students learn the fundamentals of electrical wiring and acquire the skillsets needed to specify and select materials, install electrical devices, and ensure compliance with inspection requirements and regulations governing electrical wiring in The Bahamas.

Welding Certificate

The Certificate (Level II) in Welding equips students with the skills and techniques needed to enter the workforce as semi-skilled welders. Students learn the fundamentals of welding and gain hands-on experience in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions on 3/8" steel plates. They also develop proficiency in fabricating and repairing objects and structures, including constructing square, H, A, circular, and combination frames, as well as welding pipes in appropriate positions. Emphasis is placed on the proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools, along with workplace safety.

Students complete the internationally recognized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification examination and a 160-hour internship, where they gain practical, real-world experience. This programme prepares students for careers in welding and related fields.

Introduction to Photovoltaic Systems Special Interest Certificate

The Special Interest Certificate in Introduction to Photovoltaic Systems prepares students to work under the supervision of a trained solar professional. Students acquire fundamental skills and techniques related to photovoltaic system design and installation, commissioning and maintenance, and supply chain management.

Students complete a 90-hour internship during which they gain practical hands-on experience. This 120-hour programme provides a foundational understanding of photovoltaic systems and prepares students for entry-level roles in the solar energy industry.

Solar Systems: Train-The-Trainer Continuing Occupational Education Opportunity

This Continuing Occupational Education Opportunity in Solar Systems: Train-The-Trainer prepares participants to deliver instruction in photovoltaic system design, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and management. Participants acquire the skills needed to design lesson plans that incorporate theoretical principles, practical labs, and instructional materials for training modules in photovoltaic systems.

This 144-hour programme equips participants with the knowledge and techniques required to effectively train others in the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of photovoltaic systems, as well as supply chain management, preparing them for roles as certified trainers in the solar energy sector.
