Accounting I (10 weeks)

Students are introduced to basic accounting principles and procedures. They examine transactions, General Ledger recording, banking, petty cash, adjusted entries, income, statements, balance sheets, revenue and expenses, and accounting systems. Emphasis is on demonstrating ethical accounting practices in collecting, summarising and analysing financial information and preparing journal entries and reports.

Accounting II (10 weeks)

This course focuses on the financial position of a company or business. Students are exposed to financial record keeping of business transactions. Emphasis is on the preparation of financial statements and the importance of maintaining quantitative records for audit purposes.

Acrylic Nails (5 weeks)

In this course, students learn to apply artificial (acrylic) nails and to perform pre-service and post-service steps in artificial nail procedure. They also learn how to provide services in a safe environment and implement measures which prevent the spread of infectious and contagious diseases.

Basic Carpentry (10 weeks)

This course introduces students to construction methods and techniques associated with basic carpentry. These include ceilings, scaffolds, ladders, horses, roofs and the framing of floors and walls.

Basic Customer Service (7.5 weeks)

This course covers the basic skills necessary to effectively communicate, problem solve and fulfill the needs of customers. Emphasis will be placed on developing practical strategies for improved business owner-customer interaction.

Basic Diesel Engine Repair (10 weeks)

In this course, students learn to assemble, disassemble and overhaul a diesel engine. Students also learn to diagnose engine failure.

Basic Electrical I (10 weeks)

This course introduces students to basic electrical wiring. Students learn the importance of safety practices while working with electricity. Emphasis is on electrical safety, introduction to properties of electricity, wiring materials, conductors, insulators, device wiring and various installation techniques.

Basic Electrical II (10 weeks)

This course further introduces students to basic electrical wiring and is a preparation course for Single Phase Electrical. Emphasis is on preparation for the introduction to the Single-Phase exam, floor plans, motors and transformers. For certification and emphasis, students also focus on wiring systems and practices.

Basic Office and Receptionist Skills (8 weeks)

This course introduces students to the role of office professionals in today’s rapidly changing workplace. Students are prepared to perform a variety of administrative tasks. They learn basic office procedures essential to creating effective written communication documents, appointment booking, mail handling, ergonomics, paper and electronic filing and records keeping.

Basic Plastering (10 weeks)

This course exposes students to the application of plastered surface coating. It focuses on vertical surfaces and rectangular columns including materials production, handling and preparation and surface repair.

Basic Plumbing I (10 weeks)

This course introduces students to the plumbing trade and the fundamental skills required for that trade. Emphasis is on plumbing tools and safety, the identification of pipes and fittings and their preparation and installation.

Basic Plumbing II (10 weeks)

Students learn to install plumbing fixtures (water heaters, bathtubs, water closets, lavatories) and the rough-in pipe work for urinals, washing machines, lavatories, sinks and service lines. They learn about the design and operation of hot water heaters and storage tanks and the proper installation and repair of hot water systems.

Basic QuickBooks (10 weeks)

New and existing small business entrepreneurs learn how to organize QuickBooks and use the software accurately. Students learn to analyse financial statements and set up business accounts utilising QuickBooks including company files, chart of accounts, budget, customers, vendors and employees.

Basic Sewing I (8 weeks)

This course introduces students to the components of sewing and skirt making. Basic sewing techniques, various sewing machines and tools associated with sewing are covered along with pattern making and garment construction for skirts.

Basic Straw Plaiting & Weaving (6 weeks)

Students are introduced to the origins, producers, prevalence, materials and products of the straw craft of The Bahamas, past and present. They become familiar with unique island forms of plaiting/basketry and learn to produce a number of basic weave patterns and products.

Basic Surveying (12 weeks)

Students learn the basic concepts and practical aspects of detailed site and optical surveying. Emphasis is on mapping, site investigation, calculation of area and volume, field measurement, optical surveying and site setting out. Suitable for contractors, site supervisors, construction foremen and trade persons involved with the site setting process.

Basic Tile Laying (10 weeks)

Students learn the basic concepts and practical aspects of detailed site and optical surveying. Emphasis is on mapping, site investigation, calculation of area and volume, field measurement, optical surveying and site setting out. Suitable for contractors, site supervisors, construction foremen and trade persons involved with the site setting process.

Block Laying (10 weeks)

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of concrete block laying. Students learn the relevant terminology associated with the laying of concrete units, the importance of adhering to building codes and the underlying principles governing the process of building a sound structure.

Blueprint Reading & Estimating I (10 weeks)

Students learn to interpret typical blueprints for the construction of residential buildings. They explore elements of the Architect’s Scale Rule, the site, foundation, floor and framing plans, elevations, wall sections, details and riser diagram They are introduced to the logical approach method of quantity surveying and estimating quantities and costs.

Cabinet Making I (10 weeks)

This course covers the construction of domestic cabinets. Course content includes planning, layout, materials selection and preparation procedures, frame fabrication techniques, hand and machine tool use, laminate surfacing techniques and troubleshooting. Emphasis is on skill development based on sound and safe practices using current knowledge and acceptable ethics.

Computer Applications (10 weeks)

The course covers the skills necessary to use a computer within the Microsoft Windows environment. Course content includes hardware and software familiarization, word processing, formatting and editing various documents, file management, using graphics, designing and creating a letter and internet functions. Emphasis will be placed on using Microsoft software applications for word processing, database management, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Face Care & Make-Up Application I (5weeks)

This course covers makeup application for the female face. Course content includes colour theory, coordinated application and removal, cleansing, make-up enhancements and consultation. Emphasis is on skill development and appropriate work ethics.

Face Care & Make-Up Application II (5weeks)

This course is a continuation of Face Care and Make-Up Application I. Students are exposed to the application and removal of makeup for special occasions.

Hair Braiding Basics (5 weeks)

This course covers the procedures used to create various hair braiding styles. Course content includes terms used, equipment, implements and materials, hair and scalp analysis, pre- and post-preparation. Emphasis is on skills development using live models and safe practices.

Marine Outboard Engine (12 weeks)

This course is designed to provide a thorough understanding of preventive maintenance of marine outboard engines including two and four stroke outboard engine technology. Emphasis will include 2 & 4 cycle engine operation theory, fuel systems, ignition systems, cooling system and general tune-up, troubleshooting several electrical & electronic systems, bilge pump system, lighting system and seasonal storage.

Marketing Basics (10 weeks)

This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts, issues and strategies in modern marketing. They analyse the major internal and external forces that confront organizations and suggest the most appropriate marketing mix strategies (product, price, place, promotion) that organizations may utilize to achieve their objectives.

Microsoft Access (10 weeks)

This course teaches students to manage large volumes of complex data. Students learn to store, organize, manage and retrieve data and present it in various formats and reports. Security measures such as backing up and compacting and repairing a database are also covered.

Microsoft Excel (10 weeks)

This course provides students with the tools necessary to track revenue and expenses and maintain related data. Students learn to organize and analyse data and enter text and numbers into an excel worksheet to keep up-to-date records. Emphasis is on creating formulas to develop a budget.

Microsoft Outlook (10 weeks)

This course equips students with the tools that make their jobs easier by helping them organize communication and manage time. Students learn to send messages, look up phone numbers, schedule a staff meeting and make other appointments and organize items into folders for easy access.

Microsoft PowerPoint (10 weeks)

Students learn to produce PowerPoint presentations. They learn to navigate a presentation and to add, select, replace and delete text. They also learn to copy and move text from one slide to another, open a blank presentation, reuse and rearrange slides and create a new presentation from an existing one.

Microsoft Word (10 weeks)

This course teaches students to create and edit professional-looking documents. Students learn the basics regarding document creation, including print envelopes and labels, and learn to use tables to create calendars, invoices and contact lists. Students also learn to create signs, brochures and flyers using SmartArt, clip art and shapes.

Natural Hair Styling (5 weeks)

This course introduces students to the styling of natural hair. Students are exposed to hair braiding, rope twists and locks as well as lock maintenance and styling.

Principles of Project Management (10 weeks)

Students are introduced to the concepts, techniques and principles of project management. They examine planning, organising and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. They define problems, develop solutions, plan projects and execute the plans using Microsoft Project and/or Excel software packages.

Single-Phase Electrical (14 weeks)

This course prepares students to write the Single Phase License Examination. Emphasis is on the Canadian Electrical Code – Part I, basic circuit analysis, wiring layout, load calculations, motors and controls, transformers, voltage drop calculations and electrical specifications.

Supervisory Management 1: Developing the Supervisor (10 weeks)

The course is designed for newly-appointed supervisors or persons who aspire to become supervisors. Participants identify the characteristics of highly functioning supervisors and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to implement best practices, assess their management styles and thrive in a supervisory position.

Supervisory Management 2: Team-Building, Decision-Making, Leadership (10 weeks)

This course provides participants with practical management skills and leadership styles to be proficient with using data and information to make decisions in assigning and evaluating employees in their specific jobs. Participants also learn the techniques of team building and conflict resolution in maintaining a cohesive work environment.

Three-Phase Electrical (14 weeks)

This course prepares students to write the Three Phase License Examination. Emphasis is on the Canadian Electrical Code – Part I, advanced circuit analysis, wiring layout, load calculations, motors, motor controls, transformers, voltage drop calculations and electrical specifications.
