2. What do I need to get into BTVI?
  • Must be 16 years old (with a letter of consent from parent or legal guardian) or older
  •  Must not be in high school at the point of admission (High school students who wish to take BTVI courses while in high school may do so through Dual Enrolment)
  • Completed Application for Admission submitted to the Admissions Department via the BTVI web portal btvi.edu.bs
  •  Proof of citizenship (valid e-passport or valid Certificate of Identity)
  • Certified copy of valid Permit to Reside in The Bahamas (international students only) and/or proof of having attended school in The Bahamas for 6 consecutive years
  • National Insurance Board (NIB) Smart card
  • Current police record
  • Certified copies of academic certificates, diplomas, degrees; must bring in originals
  • Official college/university/high school transcript along with course outlines for those courses for which you would like to apply for a Transfer of Credit
  • Completed BTVI medical form
  • Proof of payment of the non-refundable application processing fee
3. What do I need to get into a certificate, diploma or degree programme?

Certificate and Diploma Programmes:

  • BJC Math and English with grade C or above OR the equivalent such as post-secondary credits or Advanced Placement OR a minimum score of 70% on the BTVI English Placement Exam and a raw score of 51 on the BTVI Math Placement Exam.
  • Some programmes may have additional requirements (e..g submission of a portfolio, higher levels of Math, a science background).

Associate of Applied Science Degree Programmes:
BGCSE or GCE or CXC or the equivalent in English and Math with grade C or above.

4. What happens if I do not have direct entry requirements for a certificate, diploma or degree programme?

Students who do not have direct entry requirements for a certificate, diploma or degree programme will not be turned away; they will be placed in our Tech Prep programme to strengthen their foundation.

5. What do I need to take a Professional Development Course?
  • Completed Professional Development Application Form submitted to the Admissions Department via the BTVI web portal btvi.edu.bs
  • Proof of citizenship (valid e-passport or valid Certificate of Identity)

• National Insurance Board (NIB) Smart card
• Proof of payment of the non-refundable application processing fee

6. What are the requirements for Professional Development Courses?

There are no entry requirements for most courses; however, there are requirements for courses which lead to certification or licensure. For additional information contact [email protected].  

7. How will I know I’ve been accepted into BTVI?

BTVI staff will contact prospective students via phone or email to inform them that an acceptance package is available. However, prospective students should follow-up on their applications by contacting Admissions at [email protected].

8. How much does BTVI cost?

It varies. An eight-week Basic Sewing course costs about $400, a 12-week Master Plumbing License course costs about $1,000, while a certificate or diploma programme ranges between $2,500 and $3,000. An associate’s degree programme ranges between $6,000 and $7,000, depending on whether international certifications are involved. For details about tuition and fees, contact our Finance Department.

9. Does BTVI offer payment plans?

Yes. Students who want to go on the payment plan are required to pay 50% of their tuition and fees. The Finance Department will advise them of when the balance is due. The payment plan is available during the fall and spring semesters only; it is not available during the shorter summer semester.

10. What types of financial aid does BTVI offer?

11. What programmes do you offer on the Family Islands?

It varies. The Northern Bahamas Campus focuses on industry and information communications and technology training.  General programme offerings include associate degrees in Office Administration, Office Technology, Information Technology and Electrical Engineering; Certificates and/or Diplomas in Construction, Automotive and Electrical Trades, Office Assistant, Information Technology and Electronics.  Professional Development Courses are based on demand; the more popular courses are Single Phase Electrical, Nail Technology, QuickBooks and Face Care and Makeup Application.

In North Andros, at Huntley Christie High School, we offer carpentry, electrical installation, office assistant and office administration. In Abaco, at Patrick Bethel High School, we offer Single Phase Electrical, Acrylic Nails and Office Procedures.

12. Can my BTVI credits be transferred to other institutions?

Individual institutions will make this decision. However, BTVI students and graduates have matriculated to other institutions of higher learning and have had their BTVI credits accepted at institutions such as University of The Bahamas, Fanshawe College (Canada), Holland College (Canada), New England Institute of Technology (Rhode Island, USA).

13. How do I register online for courses?

Students have the opportunity to register online from wherever they are able to gain Internet access:

* Go to https://btvi.empower-xl.com/fusebox.cfm
* Log onto your student account with your username and password
* On the Home page go to:
– Current Filter Settings
– Select ‘Change’
– Select the drop box ‘Term’ to change the term for which you wish to register

* Go to :
– Student Records
– Registration
– Select ‘Register’

* Select your campus location (e.g. Nassau or Freeport)
* Select ‘Search’
* Then ‘Add Courses’ (Please ensure you select the approved courses from your Advisement form).
* Click ‘Register’

14. How do I sign into the Web Portal to view my grades?

– Log on to the web portal by going to www.btvi.edu.bs: Go to My BTVI and click on Web Portal
– Click on Student Records
– Click on Grades

15. How do I get a new student ID card after misplacing my current one?

A student ID will only be issued once there is proof that the student has paid for classes. Once you register for your classes and go to the Finance Office to pay your bill, you need to pay for a replacement ID ($10) as well. You then take the receipt to the Admissions Department, Office of the Registrar, where you will be issued with a replacement ID.

16. Are BTVI students covered by insurance?

Yes; BTVI students are covered by insurance. This is included in the registration fee every semester.

17. How many courses should I take every semester?

Be guided by your academic advisor and your programme of study. However, to be considered full-time, a student should take at least 5 courses every fall and spring semester.
