In a meaningful show of support, breast cancer survivors and caregivers were treated to a day of relaxation and pampering at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).
The PINK Spa Day promotion was held from 28th October to 1st November, 2024 and offered complementary spa services to some of those impacted most by breast cancer. Participants were given a much-needed chance to unwind and experience the healing benefits of massage and esthetics treatments at no cost to them.
Phillia Forbes, a cancer survivor who is currently in remission said about the promotion, “It’s a difficult road we are on, so it is always a beautiful gesture when we are remembered.” She also boasted about the massage she received at the BTVI Spa, stating that it was “top tier”. Angel Culmer, a massage student at BTVI, was her massage therapist.
Held at BTVI’s on-campus spa, PINK Spa Day promotion not only highlighted Breast Cancer Awareness but also showcased the skills of BTVI’s massage and esthetics students, who gained valuable, hands-on experience in their fields through this initiative.
Shirley Mireault, a cancer survivor, who recently celebrated her sixth year of being cancer free, boasted, “From start to finish, it was awesome! The best massage of my life – better than my chiropractor!”. Latoya McPhee was her massage therapist.
Participants for this unique experience were selected in partnership with the Cancer Society of The Bahamas and the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support. Additionally, a broader invitation was extended via social media which yielded such a positive response that bookings have continued beyond the anticipated deadline. Spaces are now full but BTVI is pleased that this initiative was successful.
Pink Spa Day was created to honour the resilience of cancer survivors and the dedication of their caregivers. Through moments of relaxation and self-care, BTVI aimed to foster a sense of community and to offer comfort and support to those who have bravely fought and continue to fight.
This initiative reflects BTVI’s commitment to making a positive impact, sending ripples of hope and healing throughout the Bahamian community.
